AssistIndependence is committed to ensuring our website is accessible and usable by everyone, regardless of ability or technology.

Our Commitment

Accessibility is not just a technical requirement for us — it's central to our mission. We believe that everyone deserves equal access to information that helps them live safely and independently. We are actively working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard. Below we are candid about where we already meet it and where we are still improving.

What We've Done

We have taken the following steps to ensure accessibility across our site:

  • Semantic HTML: We use proper HTML5 elements (header, nav, main, footer, article, section) to ensure content is structured logically for assistive technologies.
  • Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements — links, buttons, forms, and menus — are fully navigable using a keyboard alone.
  • Skip navigation: A "Skip to main content" link is provided as the first focusable element on every page.
  • Alt text: All meaningful images include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes or aria-hidden.
  • Form controls: Interactive controls such as the search box and product filters have associated labels for screen readers.
  • Responsive design: Our site works across all screen sizes and devices, and browser zoom is not disabled.
  • Reduced motion: We respect the prefers-reduced-motion system preference and disable animations for users who have enabled it.
  • Readable content: We use clear, simple language with generous line spacing (1.5x minimum) and left-aligned text for readability.

What We're Working On

We are candid about the areas where we do not yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are actively addressing these:

  • Color contrast: Our main body text meets the 4.5:1 AA ratio, but some secondary text — captions, product notes, and some links and buttons — does not yet. We are darkening these for full compliance.
  • Focus indicators: Most interactive elements show a visible focus outline, but a few form controls do not yet. We are restoring a clear focus indicator for every control.
  • Text size: Body text is 16px, but some secondary text (product specifications and captions) is smaller. We are enlarging it for easier reading.

Assistive Technology Compatibility

Our site is designed to be compatible with:

  • Screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack)
  • Screen magnification tools
  • Voice recognition software
  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • High contrast mode and custom color schemes

Known Limitations

We continuously work to improve accessibility. Currently known considerations include:

  • Some product images sourced from third-party retailers may have limited alt text. We improve these as we identify them.
  • Third-party retailer websites linked from our affiliate buttons are not under our control and may have their own accessibility limitations.
